The exercise was introduced on Moodle with the following text:
Video Exercise: The War in Ukraine
The group must produce a video presenting a discussion based on theories of International Politics.
The discussion must be carried out as a role‑play, where different arguments or perspectives emerge. For example, as a debate in Deadline or on Clement Kjersgaard’s programme between politicians from the left and right wings.
The theme of the discussion must be the war in Ukraine. You may choose to discuss one of the following questions:
1a) Why did Russia invade Ukraine? Due to Putin's ego and ambitions (classical realism) or to strengthen Russia's strategic interests, which are power and security against NATO (neo-realism).
1b) Why did Russia invade Ukraine? The West has expanded eastwards through a series of NATO enlargements. Similarly Russia is trying to increase its power in the region by controlling its neighbours (Ukraine, Georgia, Kazakhstan) (offensive neo‑realism). After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Russia became vulnerable. The war in Ukraine is Russia’s attempt to re‑establish its vital security zones (defensive neo‑realism).
2) What should the West have done to avoid the war in Ukraine? We should have established stronger commercial and political ties with Russia in the 2000s instead of NATO expansions (neoliberalism). Or we should have admitted Ukraine and Georgia, etc. into NATO at a much earlier stage, which would have deterred Russia from attacking (neorealism).
When making the video, they must distribute the following roles among themselves:
Debater 1 (e.g., realist)
Debater 2 (e.g., liberalist)
Moderator / Host
Director
Cameraman (m/f) / and Editor
The discussion must be recorded on video and submitted in Moodle.
The video may last a maximum of 3 minutes.
