BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO TEAMS

Microsoft Teams is a platform designed for collaboration within teams. As a lecturer, you can use Teams to support teaching, communication, collaboration and organisation. Below you will be introduced to Teams and how it can be used for teaching and supervision purposes.

PEDAGOGICAL ADVANTAGES

As a lecturer, you can also use Teams to facilitate a virtual Q&A session, where students before exams or placements can ask questions about the course without needing to attend physically on campus. If you are teaching a course alongside a placement, or holding mid-term seminars/status seminars, it can also be advantageous to use Teams, as students are often spread across many different locations in the country (or abroad).

Be aware that when you create a new team, you must choose the type of team to be created. We generally recommend creating Teams as “classroom” or “other”, but functionalities are continuously evolving. You can reaad more about the differences here.

As a lecturer, you can also use Teams to invite experts as guest speakers. Since your speaker is not required to spend time travelling back and forth to the lecture hall, this opens the possibility of virtual visits from individuals who would otherwise have been difficult to involve without Teams. This could be a project partner from the USA, or simply a graduate with a relevant case to present, who would not have the opportunity to take a whole day off.

Teams can furthermore be seen as a hub for many of the other technologies available in the Office 365 suite, which can easily be integrated into a team. For example, you can connect a Planner to keep track of your activities and deadlines, a Forms survey, or attach a notebook (OneNote).
